Chicagoan Elaine Soloway, author of "The Division Street Princess," has an obsession: She checks each day, often more than once, to see where her book ranks on Amazon.com’s sales chart.
"I feel really good when it’s in five figures, and I’m a little down when it’s in six figures," she said.
Soloway checks because the 68-year-old author wants to know what might be driving sales of her first book, a memoir. But she also looks compulsively because she can.
"I check all the time," she said on a day when her book had jumped to 92,407. "If you consider that obsessed, I am."
She’s not the only one.
