Montana Tech receives $1 million to identify youths with the potential to attend college and encourage them to complete high school and enroll in postsecondary education.

Montana Tech has received a $1 million federal grant to establish one of 55 new Talent Search programs nationwide.

Talent Search was established in 1965 as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty.

Its purpose is to identify youths with the potential to attend college and encourage them to complete high school and enroll in postsecondary education.

Montana Tech will use the Department of Education
grant to partner with 10 middle and high schools in Butte, Anaconda, Deer Lodge and Helena to supplement

Talent search helps students succeed

Nearly 800 area students could be assisted by a new program designed to help disadvantaged students connect with higher education, officials from Montana Tech announced Wednesday.

“We want to think that every student has an equal chance of success and it isn’t true,” said Amy Verlanic, Montana Tech’s director of Technical Outreach, in unveiling a new five-year, $1 million program.

Called the Educational Talent Search, it is intended to identify low-income students with college potential and steer them toward a college education.
