An Affordable Housing Brouhaha: Does Bozeman Want to Be an Inclusive or Exclusive Community?

Bozeman city government is currently grappling with an issue that has major implications for the economy, employers, the workforce, the building industry, the environment, family well-being, neighborhood quality of life, and the character of the community—affordable housing.

The latest solution proposal to emerge from more than two decades of efforts to address this thorny issue is an ordinance designed to create a reliable supply of housing affordable to Bozeman’s workforce as the community grows. The ordinance is now immersed in the crucible of local politics.

City government is holding public meetings on the Workforce Housing Ordinance that are bringing to the surface the good, the bad, and the scary. The hearing before the City Commission is Monday, August 7, 6 p.m. in the County Courthouse meeting room. (See http://www.bozeman.net for the exact time after the agenda is posted on August 3.)
