‘Smart’ entrepreneurs wielding technology to develop energy "smart" buildings

Entrepreneurs wield technology to provide extras

A fiber-optic system sends a property manager an e-mail alert when a restroom stall runs out of toilet tissue. A swipe of a security card not only lets occupants into a building, it turns on the lights and air-conditioning.

Two entrepreneurs have launched a company, Intelligent Buildings, that pulls together those and related services for property developers. Tom Shircliff and Rob Murchison teamed up in 2004 and have worked on projects including Ballantyne Village Shopping Center in Charlotte, N.C.

Their company is among just a few in the country to provide such a cutting-edge level of technology, insiders say.
