$2MM for UM economic development program to assist developing countries in Central Asia clears Senate panel

The Senate Appropriations Committee has approved $2 million for a University of Montana program designed to help boost Montana’s economy by using Montana experts to assist developing countries in Central Asia.

Montana Sen. Max Baucus requested that the funding be included in the fiscal year 2007 foreign operations appropriations bill that now will be considered by the full Senate.

The exchange program, spearheaded by UM professor Mehrdad Kia, provides two main services between Montana and the central Asian countries of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan.
