U of M to offer lab tech classes in Hamilton

To meet the demands of western Montana’s technical laboratory positions, the University of Montana College of Technology plans to offer laboratory technician educational classes in the Bitterroot Valley.

The new program will make people more marketable in the laboratory fields.

“Western Montana has been designated as a biotech corridor by officials in Helena,” Tony Rudbach, associate vice-president for research at the University of Montana said. “The new classes are in response to the need the university has been hearing from a variety of institutions – they need technical lab people. I live in Hamilton and I am concerned for the people who live here, hopefully we can create a pool of people and make them marketable.”

The University of Montana created two new courses, which can lead to certification for potential lab workers. The laboratory technician I certificate will require two-to-three hours per week for 15 weeks and will include homework assignments. During the course, a series of tests must be passed at the 80 percentile range or better to earn certification.
