Oil, lots of it, keeps the Sidney, Montana motel rooms full. $174,000 in Sidney buys you a lot of bedrooms

You’d think, on the first Monday in June, you would be able to find a motel room in Sidney, Mont.

OK, maybe you wouldn’t. But we did. Tourist season hasn’t swung into high gear, Sidney isn’t exactly a vacation destination anyway, and you’re more than 50 miles from anything resembling a beaten path.

For the third installment of “Two Lanes Into Montana,” photographer Michael Gallacher and I have made the 12-hour drive from Missoula to Sidney, mostly on interstate highways, and will work our way east to west across our state on Montana Highway 200. But I never thought to make room reservations.

On rare occasions in our travels across Montana, we come across people who have turned their backs on Montana’s mountain ranges and gone where the sun meets the horizon a lot earlier in the day.

“Your money goes a lot farther out here,” Barb Marsh, who moved from the Flathead Valley to Glasgow four years ago, told us as we crossed U.S. Highway 2 earlier this year.

But how much farther?
