Retirees could keep jobs under proposed Wyoming state program

To soften the impact from the impending retirement of baby boomers, the Wyoming Retirement Board is developing a plan to allow school teachers and state government employees to collect retirement while continuing to work full time.

Ron Surdam, director of the Wyoming State Geological Survey at Laramie, said he would welcome such a plan.

He said that from 20 to 40 percent of his senior staff will be eligible for retirement in the next three years. The agency has 29 staff members.

In the meantime, two of his key employees — a coal geologist and a uranium geologist — died recently. Another staff member transferred to the state homeland security agency while others left for jobs in the private sector.
