Building a haven for innovation and high technology

It’s not surprising that a senior-level discussion about boosting Maine’s high-tech economy spawned a comparison between innovative companies and yeast, the economic climate to petri dishes.

"If you create an environment in which certain desirable organisms, entrepreneurial nuclei, want to land and grow, they will land and grow there," said Laurenz Schmidt, executive vice president of global operations at South Portland’s Fairchild Semiconductor. "If the environment is unfriendly to those, they may land there, but they won’t grow."
