Report focuses on economies of Yellowstone National Park gateway towns

Being near Yellowstone National Park yields economic benefits for neighboring communities, but also a shared responsibility not to spoil a good thing, according to a new report on the region’s economy.

That’s a tricky balancing act but one communities at every edge of Yellowstone will have to strive for, the report said.

"If you don’t guide the future, it simply happens to you," said Charles Preston, curator of the natural history museum at the Buffalo Bill Historical Museum in Cody, Wyo.

Part of the key is understanding that the economies of the region have shifted and diversified in recent years with an increased emphasis on the natural environment as the chief economic asset, said Preston, who wrote an opening portion of the study.
