Governors Focused on Boosting State Competitiveness. New Issue Brief Reviews Recent State Economic Development Initiatives
A new issue brief from the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) examines governors’ economic development initiatives launched over the last year, which continued to focus on creating quality jobs and boosting the economic competitiveness of their states.
States are focusing on the new economy by promoting and rewarding innovation, building state university systems and encouraging research and development. Governors are emphasizing successful strategies from the 1990s—such as providing education and training to improve workforce skills and aiding the development of new small businesses.
"Governors understand that competition is now based on the ability of firms and individuals to innovate, exploit indigenous strengths or existing clusters and build knowledge-based activity." said John Thomasian, director of the NGA Center. "They are utilizing the skills of the workforce and the capacity for innovation to enhance states’ ability to compete in the world marketplace."
