Washington State ranks 4th in nation for venture capital investments

Venture capitalists started the year at a brisk pace, investing $310 million in 29 startup companies in the state during the first three months. That is the biggest quarterly total — both in deals and money raised — in the past five years, according to a report to be released today by Dow Jones VentureOne and Ernst & Young.

The $310 million was more than triple what was raised in the first quarter of last year and nearly double fourth-quarter totals. Washington state ranked fourth nationally in terms of money raised and fifth in number of deals, signaling that Seattle’s emerging technology industry — while maybe not in a ’90s-style boom — is certainly on the verge of exploding.
