Inc. editor ranks Boise’s ECCO as ‘Small Giant’

Bo Burlingham, editor-at-large for Inc. magazine, Thursday applauded Boise-based ECCO Group http://www.eccogroup.com/ for "a culture of intimacy" in the workplace that he says translates into better customers relations.

Burlingham argues his point in "Small Giants: Companies That Choose to be Great Instead of Big," a recently published book that examines 14 small businesses that practice a philosophy of putting employees first.

One of the 14 is ECCO, an employee-owned manufacturer of backup alarms and amber safety lights for commercial vehicles that since 1988 has grown from 30 to 200 employees, according to Ed Zimmer, the company’s president and CEO.

One thing all the companies have in common is that they’re privately or closely held, which eliminates pressures from outside shareholders for greater profits, Burlingham said.
