Portland (un)plugs in to free, universal Wi-Fi. Internet access – The city picks a small California firm to build a network that would be mostly completed in 2007

Free. Everywhere. All the time.

That’s the ambitious goal Portland set for wireless Internet access Wednesday, choosing a small California company called MetroFi Inc. to build a Wi-Fi cloud that could cover as much as 95 percent of the city by the end of next year.

The city hopes the privately funded network, supported by advertising revenues, will make high-speed Web access readily available to people who can’t afford Internet service from cable or phone companies.
