Silicon Forest is stunted. Technology falters in its promise of revitalizing Oregon’s economy as once-promising startups stall, and new high-paying jobs fail to emerge

Oregon’s wellspring of homegrown technology business is drying up.

A cluster of publicly traded companies that once promised a new era of Oregon innovation and a fountain of high-wage jobs has instead stagnated. Overrun by Asian competition and outfoxed by rivals at home, most never regained their footing after the tech bust early this decade.

More worrisome is that few high-tech companies have sprung up to take their place. In the past decade, the state has not produced a single, substantial tech success. And, on a per-capita basis, it attracts venture capital at half the national rate.
