Tutor center in Butte brings kids, mentors together

Sheldon Staman, a fourth-grader at West Elementary, doesn’t particularly like math. But Butte High senior Beth Stroeher loves it.

So the two, who meet twice a week at the YMCA’s tutoring center, are a perfect match.

And that’s the heart of the more than 20-year-old program which matches older students with younger students who need a helping hand or perhaps a mentor.

“I love little kids,” said Stroeher, who manages to fit in her tutoring duties with being a senior and a cheerleader. And for Staman, the visits are productive, helping bring up her grades and get her homework done.

“I don’t like to do it at home,” she said.
