Developer tight-lipped about plans for 8,000 acre Pony, Montana ranch

A swanky, gated golf course community, 500 homes, a luxury resort and spa — these are among the rumors that abound surrounding a developer’s plans for a foothills ranch surrounding this sleepy town.

And despite numerous questions at a town meeting here Thursday, developer Bob Sumpter carefully dodged giving any hint of what he has planned for the Hollowtop Ranch.

“That’s kind of like asking when am I going to stop beating my wife,” Sumpter said before a crowd of 120 people who packed the gym in the old school. “I’m going to keep saying the same thing: right now we have no plans, but who knows what the future holds.”

Sumpter, who is vice president of the private Yellowstone Club development in Big Sky, bought the 8,000-acre ranch last year along with investors in a group called Hollowtop Partners, LLC. The ranch includes land nestled against the foothills of the Tobacco Root Mountains north and south of Pony.
