Citing a shortage of qualified engineers in its home state of Connecticut, Sikorsky lands in Bozeman, Montana

Helicopter company to open design center

Aviation giant Sikorsky Aircraft said Monday it has selected this city as the site of a new engineering design center that is expected to employ 40 engineers by the end of the year.

Sikorsky, citing a shortage of qualified engineers in its home state of Connecticut, announced in November that it was scouring other states, including Montana, to be the site for at least one engineering design center.

The company said at the time that such a move would allow the company’s engineers to concentrate on other key components.

Butte loses bid

Sikorsky Aircraft’s decision to build a design center in Bozeman is a loss for Butte, but a win for Montana as a whole, a local business official said Monday.

“I’m disappointed that it isn’t in Butte because we put together what we felt was a very good proposal,” said Jim Smitham, executive director of the Butte Local Development Corp. “But I am very pleased that Sikorsky has found a home in Montana.” Butte submitted a proposal, at the request of state officials, to Sikorsky in February. It was the second time local officials tried to lure the Connecticut-based company here; Sikorsky eyed Butte for a new design center in 2004.
