Quick hits from 4 days at Monterey techno-fest. We aint seen nothin yet

More than 900 entrepreneurs, technologists and financiers spent $4,400 a head to participate in the Technology Entertainment Design conference in Monterey last week. The event, which ran Wednesday through Saturday, treated participants to a mind-stretching series of presentations around the theme "The Future We Will Create."

The threefold thrust of this unbusiness-like event was to identify issues such as global warming and global health; to push technology in ways that contributed to their solution; and to promote initiatives that are already moving in that direction.

Here is a sampling of the ideas expressed in the more than 50 talks featured at the event, known by its nickname, TED.

Geniuses Show They Care at TED

Saving the world trumped profit margins for a few days last week, as millionaires, billionaires and other assorted luminaries convened here to mull the future of the planet at the exclusive Technology Entertainment and Design conference.

Among this year’s invitees were Virgin Atlantic’s Richard Branson, Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, venture capitalist John Doerr, actress Meg Ryan, blogging guru Arianna Huffington and the heads of numerous car manufacturers, movie studios and advertising agencies, as well as technology and design firms.
