Author defines six crucial ingredients of integrity.

In 2001, Michael Dell made a candid admission to his top 20 managers. The statement may have prevented a massive hemorrhage of talent from Dell Inc., notes Henry Cloud in his new book, Integrity, an insightful examination of the elements of character that contribute to success in life and business.

Cloud sources a 2003 Business Week article for the reflection on Dell’s confession. That article said that Dell and company president Kevin Rollins were troubled by a survey taken that summer that indicated that half of Dell’s employees would quit if they found an attractive opportunity elsewhere.

The survey, according to Business Week, showed that subordinates saw Dell as ”impersonal and emotionally detached” and Rollins as ”autocratic and antagonistic.” Therefore, few staffers held strong loyalty to them.

Ethically adrift?: Study: Idaho lawmakers lag in integrity index

There’s an old saying asserting society tends to hang the petty thieves and appoint the great ones to public office.

That might be a gross exaggeration, but after 31 years as Idaho’s secretary of state, Ben Ysursa knows trying to legislate ethics is a bit like chasing a shadow.

“It comes down to here and here,” said Ysursa, pointing to his heart, then the side of his head. “If you have to ask yourself, ‘Should I be doing this?’ then you probably shouldn’t be.”

Less than 10 years after passing its first law on how campaign

contributions can be spent, Idaho is still grappling with concepts such as transparency and disclosure on a governmental level, and is only beginning to ask itself some tough questions.

By at least one account, there’s plenty of room for improvement.
