Experience Works for older job seekers in Montana

When D. DeWitt’s husband passed away in 2001, the retired hostess decided she didn’t want to spend all her time around the house alone.

"I thought I might as well go back to work," said the friendly 77-year-old.

But instead of looking for an opening in the restaurant business where she’d likely end up standing for hours on her feet, DeWitt turned to Experience Works http://www.experienceworks.org for training.

The nonprofit organization provides job training and employment skills to people 55 or older with limited incomes.

DeWitt learned to use a switchboard and started fielding calls at the Cascade County Office of Public Assistance in April 2002.

"I like this work and enjoy the people," DeWitt said. "And I’m still learning new things every day."

More Americans are staying in the work force past the traditional retirement age of 65 than ever before.
