Lights, camera … education: teaching filmaking in Montana. Ex-Hollywood producer, Peter Rosten mentors Montana kids. Media Arts in Public Schools

When Peter Rosten approached school administrators with an idea more than two years ago, they were skeptical.

The retired Hollywood producer — more used to working with demanding actors than kids — wanted to teach high school and middle school students in this tiny timber town all about his craft. And he promised to do it without costing taxpayers a dime.

Today, Rosten, now a certified teacher in a classroom packed with video and production equipment, has a hit with his media arts project. It has become so popular that other school districts in the state are considering it, and Montana’s governor has cited it as a step in rebuilding a film-savvy work force in the state.
