Wyoming Panel rejects tying teacher pay to quality of life

An economic tool with a funny-sounding name will not be used to calculate how much the state pays school districts to pay their teachers, unless proponents of the hedonic index manage to persuade the full Legislature that it’s a good idea.

The hedonic index sought to quantify scenery, recreation opportunities and other details of lifestyle that make people want to live in an area. Such amenities would have been considered a form of compensation, with the thinking that teachers are more likely to apply for jobs in areas with higher quality of living.

In other words, more desirable areas would have received relatively less salary money.

But members of the Joint Education Committee worried Friday that the hedonic index would become yet another issue in the state’s ongoing school finance litigation — and that their districts would be the ones getting reduced funding.
