Indian business conference draws more than 200
When it comes to private business development, American Indian tribes are more than half a century behind the times, said Mike Roberts, president of a tribal asset-building group called First Nations Development Institute.
The fact is, many tribes lack modern commercial business codes, credit resources and business training.
To solve the problem, and give Indian entrepreneurs a crack at success, Roberts said tribal leaders will have to make big changes, ones that won’t always be popular with voters.
"These steps that we are asking tribal councils to take are very risky," said Roberts, one of about a dozen speakers to address the two-day Montana Indian Business Conference in Great Falls Wednesday.
