Speaker urges Idaho to invest more in education

Emphasis on science, math will pay off for state, planner says

Idaho must restructure its educational system to emphasize math, science and technology if it wants to produce the skilled workers businesses will need in the future, according to a speaker at Tuesday’s Idaho Economic Symposium 2006.

Edward D. Barlow, president of Creating the Future Inc., a Michigan-based firm that helps communities with long-term strategic planning, said his attempt to instill a sense of urgency during a meeting with Idaho lawmakers Monday met with mixed reviews.

"Some of them were scribbling furiously, others were looking at their watches, which I think is symbolic," he said.
