Angel Groups Beginning to Work with University Technology Licensing Offices

A strong research university may well have hundreds or even thousands of new technologies and devices being developed at any one time. Charged with culling through and identifying those inventions that have potential to be licensed or turned into companies, some university technology licensing offices (TLOs) are working with angel groups to turn innovative technologies and inventions into angel deals.

"Universities and government labs are a treasure trove of new ideas," says Rick Holdren, a member of Houston Angel Network. He favors very early stage investing especially in raw technologies. "Matching a technology still in the lab to an entrepreneur, then possibly tapping alumni to fund the deal can be a very proper way to get businesses started."
