Elite group likes area’s cold, thin air for high-altitude training

An elite group of Air Force para-rescue personnel will literally descend on Butte this week, kicking off a new training and research business for the community.

The Peak Inc. is a partnership between Butte neurosurgeon Gus Varnavas and retired Air Force Capt. Rod Alne.

The center will train military and civilians under extreme conditions, such as high altitude and cold weather. It will also conduct research on ways to improve performance under those circumstances.
