Even as they prepare to blanket Portland with a wireless Internet cloud, city officials also are looking ahead to the possibility of rewiring the town in a far more ambitious project.

Camden should have wireless Internet running by end of month

Visitors to downtown Camden should be able to take along their laptops and log on for free Internet access by the end of the month.

Crews will begin installing equipment for a wireless network in the downtown business district within the next couple of weeks, said David Dunn, head of VC3 of Columbia, which is installing the network.

The network will cover 12 to 15 city blocks along Broad Street, from Rutledge Street to Monument Square. It also will stretch from City Hall on Lyttleton Street to the Camden Police Department on DeKalb Street.
