Ultrawideband’s Macworld Twirl

A new radio technology that may yield whip-fast wireless networks, radars that can see through walls and location systems for finding lost keys is finally coming to market.

Ultrawideband — or UWB, a wireless standard that has been hyped for several years as the ultimate solution to very fast PC and consumer electronics connectivity — has made its U.S. debut as real products at Macworld and CES.

With data-transmission speeds more than 100 times faster than Bluetooth and twice as fast as Wi-Fi (802.11a), UWB is the underlying technology in products by Belkin, Gefen and Delphi.

At Macworld this week, Belkin is showing off its CableFree USB Hub, a four-port wireless hub that connects a computer to USB devices like printers, scanners, hard drives and MP3 players — without wires. Plug a dongle into the PC or Mac, and the peripherals into the Belkin hub, which can be placed across the room or office.
