Kids get computers from Computer4Kids to call their own…"Bootstrapping kids into the computer age…"

Hailey Hull, 11, spent the Tuesday of her Christmas vacation in class, learning about computers. Today, after a second day of training, she’ll take the computer she has been using home with her.

Her computer was donated to the nonprofit Computer4Kids http://www.computer4kids.us by an individual or company that upgraded the equipment. It may be someone else’s castoff, but for Hailey, it is perfect because it is her own.

Hailey was one of 48 children who attended a two-day orientation at Montana State University-Billings’ downtown campus sponsored by Computer4Kids as part of a program to give computers to kids in families who may not be able to afford them. The children will all take home a computer loaded with software and ready for use.

The grass-roots organization has been giving children computers for the past five years, and, according to executive director Mike Erickson, the organization has given away 400 computers in the past year. The majority of the recipients live in the Billings area, and most are at-risk children or kids living in poverty.
