Texas Governor Perry unveils initiative to boost math, science funded by Gates and Dell. The $71 million program aims to strengthen teacher training, increase student enrollment

Warning of the threat of globalizaton to the state’s future economy, Gov. Rick Perry announced on Thursday a $71 million public-private initiative to strengthen math and science teaching in Texas secondary schools.

"If the trend continues that nations like China and India continue to graduate higher numbers of students equipped with these skills, the next generation of Texans will face a future of limited opportunities as employers take jobs elsewhere," Perry said.

While the demand for scientists and engineers is projected to double at twice the rate of all other occupations, the number of students who enter the fields of science and math is dramatically decreasing every year, Perry said.

The new initiative, funded primarily through grants from Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates and Dell Inc. founder Michael Dell, aims to stir a passion for science, technology, math and engineering in middle and high school students.
