Knowledge + Innovation = Economic Growth

In the recent Business Week article, The Global Spread of Higher Ed http://www.businessweek.com/bwdaily/dnflash/nov2005/nf20051128_6955_db013.htm?campaign_id=search , we are reminded that learning institutions around the world are copying the U.S. higher-education model. As a result, we are seeing not only more outstanding students worldwide, but a more competitive workforce arising from emerging countries.

The upside? As the article points out, prospects for global prosperity are improving with the gains in global human capital. At the same time, this also means that the success of the American university model abroad poses a threat to the vitality of the U.S. economy.

Indeed, as noted in a recently published report http://www.conference-board.org/utilities/pressDetail.cfm?press_ID=2751 on the subject, access rates to education are on the rise for primary and secondary education in developing countries and literacy rates are rapidly approaching advanced-country standards.
