MSU innovation center prolonged

The U. S. Department of Agriculture has given the Montana Agricultural Innovation Center another year to spend more than $360,000 remaining in federal funds on programs that promote Montana-made, value-added products.

Representatives from USDA made the announcement Wednesday at a press conference on the Montana State University campus.

"Ag is No. 1 in Montana, no doubt, and we want to keep it that way," said Dennis Carlson, a representative for Sen. Conrad Burns, R-Mont.

Congress funded innovation centers in Montana and nine other states when it passed the 2002 Farm Bill. Each state had $1 million and a year in which to spend it after establishing a center.

In 2004 Montana created its center, which is a consortium of five economic development centers across the state and MSU.
