Referendum ‘C’ puts Denver on the map for companies looking at doing business in Colorado

In the three days after Colorado voters narrowly approved Referendum C, 10 companies from around the nation called the Metro Denver Economic Development Corp., asking for information about doing business here.

In the week before the Nov. 1 election, another five companies called seeking information, said Tom Clark, executive vice president of the Metro Denver EDC, the economic-development arm of the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce.

"In four decades of doing this, I’ve never seen it this busy," he said. "In the 10 business days surrounding the Nov. 1 elections, 15 prospects came walking through the door.

"The buzz is out there."

The hard-fought ballot initiative allows the state to keep an expected $3.7 billion in taxes it normally would have refunded to voters in the next five years. Supporters said the initiative "tweaks" the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR), allowing the state to recover from a devastating economic slump and re-invest in its infrastructure and schools.
