Promoting Enrichment Activities for Kids (PEAK) students soar in Montana

Third-graders in the Promoting Enrichment Activities for Kids (PEAK) program have spent two weeks being engineers. First they were civil engineers and learned about bridge design.

On Monday, they got to be aeronautical engineers and spent the morning using the flight simulator at the Department of Transportation Aeronautics Division — visiting the control tower, taking a tour of Summit Design and Manufacturing and enjoying a plane ride.

Pilot Jeanne MacPherson took the children up, five at a time, in MDT’s 1975 Bonanza. MacPherson became a pilot in 1989 and received the Nation Freedom of Flight Award and has flown more Young Eagles than anyone else in the world.

“This whole aviation event exposes people to an aviation career,” she said.
