New Gallatin County, Montana report predicts huge losses if earthquake strikes

Dozens of people dead. At least a hundred more needing hospitalization. Nearly 2,000 buildings ruined with thousands more damaged. More than $800 million in economic losses, including $111 million in lost income.

Those are some of the figures that surfaced when local disaster planners simulated what would happen should a 6.5 magnitude earthquake strike Gallatin County. It’s not a stretch: Such earthquakes have hit the area in the past.

The year-long effort by the Gallatin County Geographic Information Systems Office used computer software provided by the federal government to simulate what would happen should a strong earthquake strike in the near future.
