Bison range founded in Eastern Montana – The "American Prairie Foundation"

As bison are moved onto a slice of prairie in southern Phillips County, a conservation organization is realizing its vision of restoring a piece of Montana’s high plains to its presettlement condition.

Ranchers in the area, however, are concerned that the vision conflicts with the agricultural legacy that’s dominated the grasslands south of Malta for the last hundred years.

Over the last few years, the American Prairie Foundation http://www.americanprairie.org laced together about 31,000 acres of deeded and leased land. The group, working with the World Wildlife Fund, envisions what eventually will be a 3.5 million-acre public-private prairie reserve rich with hundreds of bison, prairie dog towns and black-footed ferrets.
