Delta cuts two of eight Missoula flights

Delta Air Lines plans to reduce its flights to Missoula International Airport from eight to six 50-seat regional jets a day starting Dec. 1.

The schedule cuts by the bankrupt airline affect every commercial airport in Montana. Delta will reduce the total service by its regional carrier SkyWest Airlines in Montana from 50 to 36 flights a day. It is unclear how – or how many – employees will be affected.

Delta and Northwest Airlines Corp. both filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Sept. 14.

The reductions are necessary for Delta to “emerge from the Chapter 11 process a leaner, more efficient, profitable airline,” company officials said in a written statement Friday.

The reduction reverses a long trend in Missoula of increased service, and airport director Cris Jensen said he already has lobbied Delta to return the flights.
