Learning to manage clients can tame unpredictable workloads

Q: For nine years, I have run an environmental consulting business as a sole proprietor. My biggest challenge is how to manage a completely unpredictable workload.

I make project commitments based on schedules presented to me by my clients, but these schedules shift about 75 percent of the time.

Sometimes I turn down work because of a big job, but then the client delays that job and I’m left with a gaping hole in my schedule. Or I end up working on several jobs at once and putting in insane hours. Any suggestions?
