Delta to trim flights to Helena – Southwest Airlines announces its return to Denver

Starting Dec. 1, the Helena Regional Airport will lose two of its seven daily flights to Salt Lake City. Airport manager Ron Mercer confirmed the schedule reduction this week but said that aside from fewer flight times to choose from, the number of daily seats out of Helena to the Utah hub should be enough to accommodate the city’s air travel demand.

“It probably has limited impact if you look at the number of seats compared to the amount of traffic we generate,” he said.

The five flights will remain on 50-seat Canadair regional jets, giving the Queen City 250 seats per day two and from Delta’s Salt Lake City hub.

Delta spokesman Anthony Black said the schedule reductions are part of the bankrupt airline’s plans to return to profitability. Across the system, he said, the plan calls for a 15 to 20 percent reduction in capacity on domestic flights, with 25 percent growth in international capacity.

“We’ll continue, on an individual basis, to watch demand between markets, and to make either frequency or aircraft adjustments accordingly,” he said.

After a 20-year hiatus, Southwest will start flying out of Denver in early 2006, said Gary Kelly, Southwest’s chief executive officer Thursday during a press conference. The development comes as airlines have grappled with rising fuel prices and aggressive competition that has kept rates low.
