Internet Mania Rides Again

Conferences are one of the best indicators of how people are feeling about any particular industry, and by that measure the Internet business is back in a big way. I’m in San Francisco this week for Web 2.0, an event conceived and hosted by my good friend and former Industry Standard compatriot John Battelle, and it is mobbed.

There are more than 600 (update: organizers now say more than 900) people here, listening to the likes of Yahoo’s Terry Semel and Interactive Corp.’s Barry Diller opine about the future of technology and media – and, more importantly, networking like mad and trying to anticipate the next big thing. Or, more precisely, they’re trying to figure out how to navigate a technology and media landscape that’s increasingly dominated by Google.
