Purdue Extension shifts mission

Service alters focus of program to highlight its commitment to Indiana’s economic needs.

The Purdue Extension, which has provided agricultural, leadership and family-sciences programs to generations of Indiana farm families, is retooling one of its missions to focus on economic development.

Established at Purdue University in 1869, the Purdue Extension long has been divided into four areas: Agriculture and Natural Resources, Consumer and Family Sciences, 4-H and Youth Development, and Leadership and Community Development.

From now on, however, the leadership and community development arm will be known as Economic and Community Development — a change meant to showcase a commitment to Indiana’s overall economic needs, in addition to its more traditional offerings.
"Purdue Extension has a particularly strong presence in some of the outlying areas, and we think that kind of assistance would be very welcome, especially in those communities," said Sam Cordes, assistant director of Purdue Extension.

In Clinton County, for example, the extension office is taking the charge seriously by partnering with Mexico to address the needs of the county’s burgeoning Hispanic population. The relationship is aimed at giving immigrants the background they need to succeed.
