Beyond the Web – MapQuest launches $699 navigation device that uses GPS for in-car directions

MapQuest Inc. is moving its navigation system from the desktop to the dashboard.

Next month, the Denver-based company will begin selling the MapQuest Personal Navigation Device, which combines Global Positioning System technology with street maps to offer turn-by-turn, voice-guided directions.

The device is the latest move by the Time Warner Inc. subsidiary to extend its brand beyond the Internet in the face of new competition from Yahoo! Inc., Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp.

Earlier this year, MapQuest introduced a service that uses GPS to pinpoint a cell-phone user’s location, as well as a $4 monthly service that allows users to send color maps and directions from their computers to their cell phones.
