Idaho Prairie’s growing pains – Top architect says conservation plan needed for Prairie

Greg Ramsey feels there’s a wreck happening with growth on the Rathdrum Prairie.

And the end result will be a diminishing quality of life in Post Falls.

The award-winning architect and co-owner of Atlanta’s Village Habitat Design recently conducted a three-day workshop in Post Falls on how to build sustainable communities.

"A conservation-oriented plan has not been developed that effectively contains the sprawl (on the prairie) and preserves green space," Ramsey said. "That needed to happen yesterday."

During the workshop, Ramsey spoke with developers, architects, activists and city planners.

He said his job is to bring environmentalists, developers and the residents of growing communities together to create a walkable city that offers mixed uses, green space, quality of life and avoids sprawl.

Ramsey said a conservation plan signed off on by the cities of Post Falls, Rathdrum and Hayden is critical to the prairie’s future especially when funds for buying property simply as green space appear limited.
