ASiMI cuts 20 jobs in Butte – New Norwegian owners cite power costs, product shift among reasons for layoffs

Advanced Silicon Materials is cutting more than 20 jobs at its Butte plant, a company official announced Monday.

ASiMI is laying off about 40 technical and administrative workers in Butte and Moses Lake, Wash., to adjust to a cyclical polysilicon market and skyrocketing electricity bills, Chief Executive Officer Goran Bye said from his Butte office.

"This is unpleasant for everyone," Bye said. "It’s always sad when you have to do this. But there are simply too many people here." ASiMI also is cutting an unspecified number of management, contracted and temporary jobs.
