Inside Entrepreneurship: Seattle isn’t the startup mecca many think it is

Like many other Washington state newcomers, I was originally drawn to Seattle because of its strong entrepreneurial identity. With dozens of successful, technology-leading companies and pioneering entrepreneurs, Seattle was a top entrepreneurial epicenter — certainly one of them anyway.

But a recent study funded by the Small Business Administration and the Edwin Lowe Foundation says cities such as Fort Collins, Colo.; Raleigh, N.C.; Provo, Utah, and Austin, Texas — not Seattle — are among the most innovative entrepreneurial regions in the country.

Actually, Seattle didn’t rank in the top 20 of any primary measure of technology innovation or entrepreneurial activity. (Ouch!)
