Washington State urged to pursue creative tech industries

A roundtable of researchers talked Wednesday about bio-based fuel products, designer foods to cure diseases and wheat with specific therapeutic proteins as commercial enterprises to pursue in Washington state.

At a first-of-its-kind meeting at the James Tower in Seattle, about 170 leaders from government, academia and business mulled these ideas over, as they talked about a life sciences vision and identifying industries to be exploited.

While acknowledging that a more defined vision still needs to be worked out, participants from throughout the state said collaboration and using regional research institutions will be crucial in this endeavor.

"If we remain complacent, we’ll be a second-rate competitor," said Gov. Christine Gregoire, the key organizer of the gathering.
