Hurricane Katrina: Information Technology Impact And Response

As noted in one of our blog items about Hurricane Katrina this week, IT can and is doing a lot to help in the ongoing recovery efforts.

These contributions so far range from passing on messages and aiding in the search for loved ones, facilitating online fundraising, delivering first-hand reports and images, and helping with the logistics of moving personnel, supplies and equipment to the stricken gulf areas of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Technology will no doubt play a future role in the rebuilding of New Orleans’ levees, and the reconstruction of the many destroyed cities and towns.

Of course, there are areas of notable weaknesses in what technology can do, or failed to do, and we cover those issues as well in our package of stories following the devastation wrecked by one of the nation’s worst ever natural disasters.
