National Endowment for the Arts Web Site Features The Montana Museum of Art and Culture at The University of Montana

The Montana Museum of Art and Culture at The University of Montana is in the spotlight on the Web site of the National Endowment for the Arts.

The exposure is allowing the museum to gain national attention for its impressive collection of works and for its efforts to bring exhibitions to viewers throughout the nation. The site is online at http://www.arts.endow.gov/features/stories/8-05-mt-univ.html.

More than 9,500 works focusing on Western, Native American and Asian art – one of the largest collections in Montana – are held at the UM museum.

"If you visit the National Endowment for the Arts Web site, you’re witness to the vibrant art-making that goes on all across our nation," said Barbara Koostra, director of the UM museum. "We’re delighted the Montana Museum of Art and Culture is among the organizations in the NEA ‘Features’ section and are extremely grateful for NEA grant funding support."

That NEA support, Koostra said, helped the museum share the exhibition "Contemporary Native American Art – Reflections After Lewis and Clark" with neighbors and visitors from across Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma and Washington. The exhibit, which includes works by 20 nationally and internationally known artists, now is traveling to tribal and non-tribal art museums along the Lewis and Clark trail.

The Montana Museum of Art and Culture is located in UM’s Performing Arts and Radio/Television Center. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 4 to 8:30 p.m.
