‘Grossology’ is stinky, oozy and educational

By Justin Dickerson, USA TODAY
A popular science exhibit shows that museums are getting wise about what it takes to educate kids: Gross them out.

Kids learn about nasal passages — mucus and all — during the Tour du Nose.

Disgusting is appealing, says Peggy Toth, CEO of Advanced Animations, creator of the museum exhibit Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body. The company specializes in animatronics for theme park attractions, including dinosaurs for Universal Studios’ Jurassic Park ride. But the stinky and oozy realm of human bodily functions is its first touring museum exhibit.

Inspired by the series of Grossology books by science teacher Sylvia Branzei, the exhibit is grossing out science fans in Atlanta, Charlotte and other cities this summer. It has been to more than 30 cities since the exhibit launched in 2000.
